The Salvadori Center is a nonprofit educational organization founded in 1987 by structural engineer Mario G. Salvadori, originally as the Salvadori Educational Center on the Built Environment, based on the Upper West Side near Columbia University. Salvadori developed the program as a volunteer working with students in New York City public schools, using buildings, bridges, and parks in students' own neighborhoods to teach math, science, and engineering concepts. The center now delivers free, multi-day STEAM programs to K-12 students, including many from economically disadvantaged and NYCHA communities across New York City's five boroughs, with students building hands-on projects such as model bridges. It has continued to expand through grant-funded partnerships with schools and community centers.
