Publicolor is a New York City nonprofit founded in 1996 by industrial designer Ruth Lande Shuman, who developed the concept while completing a master's thesis at Pratt Institute. The organization engages high-risk students, roughly ages 12 to 24, through design-based after-school and summer programs built around having them help repaint and redesign their own schools and community facilities. Its offerings include a Paint Club, a Design Studio, and a Summer Design Studio run in partnership with Pratt Institute, along with college-readiness mentoring and scholarships. Publicolor reports having transformed more than 450 schools and community spaces since its founding, and cites a roughly 95 percent high school graduation rate among program participants, well above the average for low-income New York City students.
