Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art is a nonprofit exhibition space within Snug Harbor Cultural Center in St. George, Staten Island, occupying part of the campus's Greek Revival buildings once home to Sailors' Snug Harbor. Founded in 1977, the center originally focused on artists living or working on Staten Island and on work reflecting the island's history, before broadening into a wider contemporary-art program. Its galleries are large enough to accommodate sizable installations, large-scale works, and outdoor sculpture, a scale that sets it apart from many comparable New York exhibition spaces. The center presents rotating group and solo shows spanning painting, sculpture, installation, and mixed media, alongside public art and artist residencies, with an ongoing emphasis on emerging and underrepresented artists.
