White Columns is New York City's oldest alternative nonprofit art space, founded in 1970 by artists Jeffrey Lew and Gordon Matta-Clark as the 112 Workshop, the storied SoHo alternative space. It took the White Columns name after relocating to Spring Street in 1979, later moved to Christopher Street and then the Meatpacking District border, and has occupied a space on Horatio Street in the West Village, near the Whitney Museum and the High Line, since 2018. The gallery is devoted to emerging artists without commercial representation, presenting exhibitions, talks, and screenings free to the public, and operates a record label, The Sound of White Columns, releasing work by artist-performers.
