The Tenement Museum is a history museum and National Historic Site on the Lower East Side of Manhattan dedicated to the immigrant and migrant experience in New York City. Founded in 1988 by Ruth Abram and Anita Jacobson after they discovered an abandoned 1863 tenement building, the museum opened its first restored apartment in 1995 and added a second historic building, incorporated in 2008, as its visitor center. Its two buildings on Orchard Street once housed thousands of residents from more than twenty nations. The museum offers guided apartment tours recreating the homes of Jewish, Italian, Irish, Chinese, and Latino families across different eras, alongside neighborhood walking tours and culinary programs. Its mission, per museum president Annie Polland, is to elevate immigrant, migrant, and refugee stories to promote a more inclusive vision of American identity.
