South of the Navy Yard Artists
Art gallerySouth of the Navy Yard Artists, known as SONYA, was a nonprofit collective of visual artists living, working, and exhibiting in the Fort Greene, Clinton Hill, Wallabout, and Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhoods of Brooklyn. Active from 1999, it organized an annual free open-studio weekend, the SONYA Artwalk, drawing dozens of local painters, photographers, sculptors, ceramicists, and video artists into public view across those neighborhoods. After seventeen editions, the collective permanently ceased operations in 2016; the following year, the Myrtle Avenue Brooklyn Partnership and FAB Alliance launched the Fort Greene & Clinton Hill Artwalk to carry on its legacy.
