Seaport Museum New York, more formally the South Street Seaport Museum, was founded on May 22, 1967, by preservationists who sought to save Manhattan's historic waterfront district as its warehouses fell into disrepair and its sailing ships were being scrapped. Located in the South Street Seaport Historic District, the museum traces the history of the Port of New York and its commercial and cultural impact on the city, using the tagline "Where New York Begins." Its holdings include a maritime reference library, a working print shop, galleries of art and artifacts, and a fleet of historic vessels such as the 1885 cargo ship Wavertree and the 1908 lightship Ambrose, supporting exhibitions and education programs.
