SculptureCenter, based in Long Island City, Queens, is a nonprofit contemporary art museum founded in 1928 in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, as the Clay Club by sculptor Dorothea Denslow. After moves through the West Village and the Upper East Side, the organization relocated to Queens in 2001, converting a former trolley repair shop into galleries with forty-foot ceilings, a project led by architects Maya Lin and David Hotson; a 2014 renovation by Andrew Berman added an enclosed courtyard and additional exhibition space. As a non-collecting institution, SculptureCenter presents around three exhibition cycles annually devoted to commissioned and emerging work in sculpture and related media, alongside artist talks, performances, film screenings, and publications.
