Rhizome is a nonprofit arts organization devoted to born-digital art and internet culture, affiliated with the New Museum in Manhattan since 2003. It began as an email list founded by Mark Tribe in 1996 and became a nonprofit in 1998, evolving into a hub for commissioning, exhibiting, and preserving net art. Its ArtBase archive holds thousands of software-based, web, and moving-image works by artists worldwide, and its Digital Preservation Program builds open-source tools such as Webrecorder/Conifer and OldWeb.today for archiving the dynamic web. Rhizome has awarded more than 100 commissions, staged exhibitions including Net Art Anthology, and hosts the annual Seven on Seven conference pairing artists with technologists.
