Mark Bouthilette is an abstract painter working from a shared studio at The 1896 Studio and Stages in Bushwick, Brooklyn. His paintings begin with rapid application of wet paint, capturing a spontaneous, unrepeatable moment, followed by a sanding process he compares to Buddhist meditation on impermanence; he describes the finished works as tangible relics of thought. His imagery, often drawing on illustrated natural history books and the music culture of his youth, looks for visual correspondences between lightning bolts and synapses, rivers and arteries, and bones and branches, informed by his interest in tantric art and Indus Valley philosophy. His work has been shown at Botanic Gallery and at Lichtundfire in New York.
