743 Studios is the shared Bushwick, Brooklyn studio of photographer and painter Neil Constantine and multidisciplinary artist Niceli Portugal. Constantine, who turned to visual art after earlier work in writing and comedy, works as a photojournalist documenting protests, portraits, and everyday life as candidly as possible, alongside a more instinctive, experimental painting practice, and has made art with refugee communities in New York and Greece. Portugal, originally from Arequipa in Peru's Andes, creates participatory sculptures and installations from reclaimed and construction-site materials, drawing on Andean Cosmovision to address immigration, sustainability, and colonialism, and has built educational programs for institutions including the Guggenheim Museum and Queens Museum. The studio opens to the public during weekend open-studio hours.
