Intrepid Museum Foundation
Art galleryIntrepid Museum Foundation is the nonprofit organization, established in 1979, that operates the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum aboard the decommissioned aircraft carrier USS Intrepid, docked at Pier 86 on Manhattan's West Side. The foundation was formed to save the Essex-class carrier from scrapping and opened it to the public as a museum in 1982. Exhibits aboard the ship include more than two dozen historic military aircraft, the space shuttle Enterprise, the submarine USS Growler, and a Concorde supersonic jet, presented across multiple flight decks with interactive displays, simulators, and educational programming. The foundation also supports the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund, which assists families of service members killed in action, and the museum draws several hundred thousand visitors a year.
