The Grey Art Museum is New York University's fine arts museum, now located at Cooper Square in Manhattan after relocating from its longtime Washington Square home and reopening in March 2024, when it was renamed from the Grey Art Gallery. NYU's art collection dates to 1958, and the gallery itself was established in 1975 following a major gift of roughly 700 modern artworks from philanthropist Abby Weed Grey. Its holdings of some 5,000 to 6,000 works include the Abby Weed Grey Collection of modern Asian and Middle Eastern art alongside 19th- and 20th-century American and European pieces by artists such as Picasso, Matisse, and Miro. The expanded Cooper Square building includes three galleries and a study center, and recent exhibitions have featured artists including Alison Knowles and Helen Frankenthaler.
