Calabar Gallery is a Harlem-based gallery dedicated to contemporary African, Caribbean, and African American art, founded by Atim Annette Oton, a Nigerian-born, American- and British-educated designer turned curator who named the gallery for Calabar, Nigeria, one of the cities where her mother collected contemporary art. The gallery shows work across painting, sculpture, works on paper, photography, mixed media, and installation, selecting artists whose work is inspired by Black African culture globally and engages ideas about art and society. Its programming has included thematic exhibitions such as 'Afrofuturism,' 'Sisterhood: Black Women Artists,' and 'Protestations: délé jẹ́gẹ́, Art, and Activism,' alongside residencies and collector programs, and the gallery participates in fairs including Miami Art Week and the Hamptons Fine Art Fair.
