The Brooklyn Museum is New York City's second-largest art museum, housed in a 560,000-square-foot Beaux-Arts building designed by McKim, Mead & White that formally opened in 1897. The institution traces its origins to the Brooklyn Apprentices' Library, founded in 1823, and today holds roughly 500,000 objects, including Egyptian antiquities spanning more than 3,000 years, American art from the colonial period onward, and significant European, African, and Asian collections, with works by artists such as Mark Rothko, Edward Hopper, Georgia O'Keeffe, and Judy Chicago. The museum opened the Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art in 2007 and in 1923 became a pioneer in exhibiting African objects as art rather than ethnographic artifacts.
