The Alpha Workshops is a nonprofit decorative arts school founded in 1995 as the first organization in the country to combine decorative arts training with employment for adults with disabilities, including people living with HIV/AIDS. Based in Brooklyn, it draws on traditions from the Omega Workshops, the Wiener Werkstatte, the Bauhaus, and the American Arts and Crafts movement to teach hand-painted finishes, wallpapers, and textiles. Students and graduates have produced work installed at Saks Fifth Avenue, the Woolworth Tower, and Gracie Mansion. Alongside vocational training and studio practice programs, the organization channels proceeds from its decorative arts sales back into education and employment programs for at-risk youth and adults with disabilities.
