The Morgan Library & Museum began as financier J.P. Morgan's private library in Murray Hill, Manhattan, and opened to the public as a museum in 1924. Its original building, a classical marble structure Morgan commissioned from architect Charles McKim of McKim, Mead & White, was completed in 1906; long-time librarian Belle da Costa Greene organized and expanded the collection over four decades. The institution's holdings exceed 350,000 objects, including illuminated manuscripts dating from the 6th to 16th centuries, three Gutenberg Bibles, and manuscripts and scores by figures such as Beethoven and Mozart. The campus today combines the original McKim building, a 1920s annex, a 19th-century brownstone, and a glass entrance pavilion designed by Renzo Piano that opened in 2006.
