The Studio Museum in Harlem is a Manhattan museum founded in 1968 to make art part of the everyday life of the African American community, opening its first exhibition, "Electronic Refractions II" by Tom Lloyd, in a rented loft in Harlem before relocating to its present Harlem site in 1982. It collects, preserves, and exhibits work by artists of African descent locally, nationally, and internationally, with a permanent collection of roughly 2,000 works by artists including Faith Ringgold, Glenn Ligon, James Van Der Zee, and Lorraine O'Grady. Its long-running Artist-in-Residence program has supported more than 100 emerging artists, and the museum, now led by director Thelma Golden, reopened in a new David Adjaye-designed building in Harlem in November 2025.
