The Staten Island Museum traces its founding to 1881, when fourteen young local naturalists pooled their personal collections, opening to the public from a St. George building in 1908; founders included William T. Davis, Nathaniel Lord Britton, Arthur Hollick, and Charles W. Leng. An arts section added in 1909 led to its 1918 incorporation as the Staten Island Institute of Arts & Sciences, broadening its scope to natural science, art, and history. In 2015 the museum relocated to an 1879 building at Snug Harbor Cultural Center after a $24.4 million renovation. Its holdings include roughly 500,000 natural-science specimens, a historical archive dating to the seventeenth century, and a fine-art collection spanning ancient to contemporary work.
