SculptureCenter is a nonprofit contemporary art museum founded in 1928 in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, as the Clay Club by sculptor Dorothea Denslow, who invited local children and artists to work in her studio. The organization later moved through the West Village and the Upper East Side before relocating in 2001 to a former trolley repair shop in Long Island City, Queens, which architects Maya Lin and David Hotson converted into galleries with forty-foot ceilings; a 2014 expansion by Andrew Berman added an enclosed courtyard. A non-collecting institution, SculptureCenter mounts roughly three exhibition cycles a year devoted to commissioned and emerging work in sculpture and expanded media, alongside artist talks, performances, screenings, and publications.
