Lower East Side Printshop is a nonprofit printmaking studio founded in 1968 by printmaker Eleanor Magid, who trained under Robert Blackburn and started the organization by teaching printmaking to neighborhood children during a New York City school strike. Originally based in the East Village, the Printshop relocated to a larger facility in Midtown Manhattan in 2005 and is now among the largest open-access printmaking studios in the country, working with roughly 160 artists a year. It helps contemporary artists create new work and advance their careers through workspace residencies — including the Keyholder, Summer, and Publishing programs — that provide studio time, stipends, and technical support, alongside public classes, workshops, lectures, and exhibitions that connect artists with museums, galleries, and collectors.
