Japan Society is a nonprofit organization founded in 1907 to promote relations between the United States and Japan, based in Midtown Manhattan near the United Nations. Its current building, designed by architect Junzo Yoshimura, opened in 1971 as the first contemporary Japanese building in New York City. The organization's gallery mounts exhibitions of Japanese art ranging from historical to contemporary work, and it also runs a film program including the annual Japan Cuts festival, presents traditional and contemporary performing arts, offers a multi-level Japanese-language school, and hosts public programs on business and policy.
