Franklin Furnace Archive is a nonprofit founded on April 3, 1976, by artist Martha Wilson to present, preserve, and advocate for avant-garde art vulnerable to institutional neglect, censorship, or its own ephemeral nature. It became an early New York platform for artists' books and performance and installation art, giving exposure to figures including Jenny Holzer, Barbara Kruger, Eric Bogosian, Karen Finley, and Laurie Anderson. In 1993 the Museum of Modern Art acquired its collection of more than 13,500 artists' books, magazines, and audiotapes. The organization runs the Franklin Furnace Fund grant program for early-career artists and a Sequential Art for Kids program in New York public schools since 1985, and is now based in Long Island City, Queens.
