FiveMyles is a nonprofit exhibition and performance space in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, founded in 1999 by artist Hanne Tierney, who opened the 1,500-square-foot former garage and named it for her son Myles, a filmmaker killed while covering the war in Sierra Leone. Its inaugural show featured African photojournalism, and the space has since built a program emphasizing underrepresented artists, including photography, video, and work connected to East Africa, the Caribbean, and Native American traditions, alongside solo and group exhibitions addressing place, identity, and politics. FiveMyles received an Obie Award in 2000 and has been covered by the New York Times, Village Voice, and Art in America.
