Canada is an artist-founded contemporary gallery established in 1999 by artists Sarah Braman, Suzanne Butler, Phil Grauer, and Wallace Whitney, conceived as an artist-invented, artist-run space that emerged from Brooklyn's late-1990s artist community — less a commercial venture at the outset than a forum for artists to consider one another's work a step removed from the studio. The gallery began in a basement space in Tribeca, moved to the Lower East Side in 2002 as one of the first galleries in what became a major art hub, relocated to a converted Chinatown print shop in 2012, and is now based in Tribeca. Canada is known for giving early solo exhibitions to emerging and mid-career artists, including Joe Bradley, Katherine Bernhardt, Xylor Jane, Matt Connors, Joanna Malinowska, and Elisabeth Kley.
