A.I.R. Gallery is a feminist, artist-directed nonprofit and alternative exhibition space for women and nonbinary artists, founded in 1972 as the first all-women artists' cooperative gallery in the United States and today its longest running. Started in SoHo by a group that included Barbara Zucker, Susan Williams, Dotty Attie, and Mary Grigoriadis, with early members such as Nancy Spero, Howardena Pindell, and Louise Bourgeois, the cooperative formed to secure professional exhibition space for women at a time when New York's commercial galleries showed almost exclusively male artists. Long based in Dumbo, Brooklyn, A.I.R. runs fellowship, commissioning, and membership programs, and is planning a return to Manhattan with a new space in the West Village's Federal Archive Building.
