Steve Wasterval
PaintingSteve Wasterval is a painter based in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, where he has lived and worked for over a decade. Working in acrylic, he paints street scenes, fire escapes, industrial buildings, and residential blocks that document the neighborhood's changing character, in a style reminiscent of Russian Impressionism. Since 2018 he has run an ongoing project hiding more than 200 miniature paintings, each about two by one and a half inches, around Greenpoint for residents to find, tucked into traffic cones, lamppost flyers, and Citi Bike stations, turning neighborhood walks into a recurring scavenger hunt. Hyperallergic and other outlets have covered the hunts as a way of chronicling gentrification and the loss of older buildings to development.
