Richard Haas (b. 1936, Spring Green, Wisconsin) is a New York-based artist known for large-scale trompe-l'oeil architectural murals that create illusions of extended facades, arcades, and interior spaces on real buildings. Trained at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and the University of Minnesota, he began painting outdoor murals in New York City in the 1970s and has since completed more than fifty major commissions across the United States and in Europe, including a Brooklyn Bridge mural on a Con Edison substation and interior work at the New York Public Library's main branch. His honors include the American Institute of Architects' Medal of Honor, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and a National Endowment for the Arts award; he was elected to the National Academy of Design and served as its president from 2009 to 2011.
