Paul Choate
PaintingPaul Choate is a Greenpoint, Brooklyn-based artist and designer whose practice sits at the intersection of painting, craftsmanship, and technology. His background combines fine-art training with furniture-making expertise, which he now channels into custom-built painting devices: he designs his own 3D-printed painting machines and uses AI-assisted "vibe coding" methods to help generate and execute paintings, describing his aim as bridging the physical and digital worlds. He has shown work through Greenpoint Open Studios and maintains an active studio presence on Instagram as @choate.studio.
Paul Choate was born in Southeast Texas and currently works in Brooklyn, New York. He received traditional training in fine art at a young age under Vivian Escagne. Paul's passion for creativity blossomed following his first fine art show at the Port Arthur Texas Art Museum, leading him to pursue a career in the arts. After graduating from Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), Paul embraced new challenges in Furniture and Industrial Design. From 2008 to 2015, he dedicated himself to designing and crafting bespoke furniture in Brooklyn. His innovative spirit led him to build his first custom CNC machine, a pivotal moment that advanced his design process in digital fabrication and ignited his interest in automation. In 2021, having become an expert in automation, Paul brought his work full circle by designing custom painting machines. This endeavor allowed him to harmonize technology and fine art in a unique and authentic manner. Paul's art is fueled by his need for invention, and his creations continue to elevate his artistic practice to strange and exciting new heights.
