Noel Caban is a Gowanus, Brooklyn-based visual artist working across painting, print, collage, found objects, and mixed media, often incorporating urban detritus into works addressing displacement, memory, and survival. His project "Projecto Gasa," developed during an LMCC Governors Island studio residency, examines public and institutional data collected on Hispanic and other communities of color since the start of the pandemic. He has held residencies at the Vermont Studio Center and Gowanus Studio Space, and has shown work at venues including the Belskie Museum, Sweet Lorraine Gallery, the Charles P. Sifton Gallery, BWAC, and the Azarian McCullough Art Gallery, with a 2026 show scheduled at SUNY Brockport's Tower Fine Arts Gallery. He teaches art at Studio in a School and has previously taught at PS40 and Pratt Institute.

Projecto Gasa, developed during my LMCC Governors Island residency, questions the research data generated by public, private, and institutional entities on Hispanics and people of color (POC) since the pandemic began. While some of this data proved instrumental in advancing vaccine development and identifying outbreak zones, much of it also reinforced pre-existing narratives about these communities. As with much of the media's output, this research is often decontextualized, reframed, and manipulated to fit specific ideological frameworks. In this body of work, I explore these dynamics by integrating data, writings, contextual imagery, and outbreak demarcation zones, all grounded in a rich material base to inform the visual language.
