Mil Mundos
OtherMil Mundos is a bilingual bookstore and community center in Bushwick, Brooklyn, founded in March 2019 by Maria Herron, a Cuban American New Yorker who had previously spent four years as a collective member at Bluestockings, the collectively run Manhattan bookstore. About half of Mil Mundos' collection is in Spanish, and the shop operates with a bilingual, language-justice-focused staff, curating titles on Indigenous history, social resistance, and Latin American literature alongside stock centering Black and Latinx voices. What began as a conventional for-profit shop shifted within its first weeks to a cooperative, activist model in which staff share decision-making power around shared causes, and the space regularly hosts cafecitos, author events, and school partnerships.
