David (Han Jin) Kim’s artwork combines technology, material experimentation, and interactive design. He creates modular sculptures and installations that blur the line between functional object and fine art. Using 3D printing, resin, silicone, wood, and casting techniques, he develops colorful, reconfigurable components that encourage viewers to touch, rearrange, and engage directly with the work. A recurring theme in Kim’s practice is the transformation of stigma into play. For example, he reimagines objects often associated with taboo subjects—such as BDSM or sexual wellness—by presenting them in bright colors, unexpected forms, and inviting textures. In doing so, his pieces move away from conventional, coded aesthetics (like dark, heavy, or overly “serious” tones) toward designs that feel approachable, playful, and even joyful. Beyond taboo, his sculptures also explore identity, perception, and space. By blending sleek technological forms with organic elements, Kim highlights how design can embody cultural meaning and personal expression. The modular nature of many of his works makes them inherently collaborative: they are not static but change depending on how audiences interact with and reconfigure them. Ultimately, his artwork is both visually striking and conceptually layered. Each piece is an experiment in how materials, colors, and interactivity can shift how we understand objects—not just as tools or symbols, but as carriers of personal and collective meaning.
